The circumstances that surrounded the creation of Jubilee were quite extraordinary.  I had just finished and turned in my previous commission, Manic Melodies, when the National Park Service announced an Artist-in-Residence opportunity at Dry Tortugas National Park for late this summer (2015).  Applying for the position requires one to submit three samples of their work and since this opportunity was so special to me, I set out to write a work to use for this specific purpose.

My collaborating partner for the project was the University of Central OklahomaWind Symphony under the direction of Dr. Brian Lamb.  The piece is a celebration of the 125th anniversary of UCO, my alma mater.  As I wrote the music I felt connected to the rich history such a long time in existence must have provided.  The music that I produced is a reflection of the spirits of creativity, excellence, and persistence that the institution embodies.  Admittedly, my excitement for the Dry Tortugas Artist-in-Residence opportunity can be heard, as well.

Musically speaking, the piece is an exploration of a single theme.  Played first by the English horn, the theme is passed between many instruments, first the winds and later the brass.  A loud F major chord turns minor and takes us to a stormy middle section riddled with dissonance before reversing course; effectively taking us to the buoyant finale.  A final statement of the theme (played once again by the English horn) reflectively closes the work.

Jubilee was first played on April 28th, 2015 by the University of Central Oklahoma Wind Symphony under the direction of Dr. Brian Lamb.  The concert took place at Mitchell Hall on the UCO campus.  Joseph Wilkes was the English horn soloist.
